Mandarin has four tones.普通话一共有四个声调。
The first tone is flat and high.一声平平的，高高在上。
The second tone rises like asking a question.二声往上扬，像在提问。
The third tone dips down then up.三声先拐下去，再翘上来。
The fourth tone falls short and heavy.四声直直地降，短而有力。
Same syllable with different tones has different meanings.同一个音节，声调不同，意思就不同。
That is why tones are so important in Chinese.所以声调对中文特别重要。
